In Bangladesh, Language Martyrs’ Day is observed on February 21 to commemorate the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement. The day is also known as Shaheed Dibash and commemorates the sacrifices made by Bengali nationalists during the 1950s. On this day in 1952, a number of students and intellectuals were killed by police firing while protesting against the imposition of Urdu as the sole official language of Pakistan. The movement was successful in ensuring that Bengali was recognized as one of the official languages of Pakistan.
