Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, in Stonewall, Texas. He was a Democratic politician who served as a U.S. Representative and Senator from Texas before becoming Vice President, and eventually President, of the United States. As President, Johnson oversaw the passage of landmark civil rights and social welfare legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He also presided over the escalation of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Lyndon B. Johnson died on January 22, 1973, just over four years after leaving office.
