History of National Parents’ Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
National Parents’ Day is a holiday in the United States that is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July. The holiday was established in 1994 by President Bill Clinton and is meant to recognize the importance of parents in the lives of their children. It is also meant to encourage parents to spend time with their children and to be more involved in their lives.
National Parents’ Day can be traced back to a Mother’s Day celebration that was started in 1908 by Anna Jarvis. Jarvis originally wanted Mother’s Day to be a day where mothers were recognized for their contributions to society. However, the holiday eventually became commercialized and focused more on giving gifts to mothers.
In response to this, Jarvis started a movement to have a day where parents were recognized for their role in raising their children. She eventually succeeded in getting Mother’s Day declared a national holiday in 1914. However, it wasn’t until 66 years later that a day specifically for fathers was established. In 1972, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation declaring Father’s Day a national holiday.
It wasn’t until 1994 that a day specifically for parents was established. This was done by President Bill Clinton signing a presidential proclamation. National Parents’ Day is now celebrated on the fourth Sunday of every July.
