National Zipper Day is a day to celebrate one of the most useful inventions of the 20th century – the zipper! This simple device has made our lives so much easier, and we often take it for granted.
On this day, let us all take a moment to appreciate the humble zipper and all that it does for us. Let us also remember the man who invented it – Gideon Sundback.
Sundback was born in Sweden in 1880 and emigrated to the United States in 1905. He began working for the Universal Fastener Company in 1913, and it was there that he began developing his idea for the zipper.
The first zippers were made of metal and were used mostly for closing tobacco pouches. But Sundback continued to improve upon his design, and by the 1920s, zippers were being used in clothing.
Today, we use zippers everywhere – in our clothes, bags, shoes, and even in some furniture. And we have Sundback to thank for making our lives just a little bit easier.
