In Nicaragua, New Year’s Day is celebrated with a large festival called “La Gritería.” The celebration starts at midnight on December 31st, when people gather in the main square of their town or city. They light candles and sing religious songs to welcome in the new year. At the stroke of midnight, everyone hugs and kisses their friends and family. They then make noise by banging pots and pans, setting off fireworks, and playing music. The party continues into the early hours of the morning.
