Syria’s October Liberation Day commemorates the country’s victory over Israel in the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. The war began on October 6, 1973, and ended on October 25, 1973. Syria, along with Egypt and Jordan, attacked Israel in an attempt to regain control of the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights, which had been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War. After 19 days of fighting, Syria and Israel agreed to a cease-fire, and Israel withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula.
