Saint Nicholas of Flüe was a Swiss hermit and mystic who lived in the 15th century. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
Nicholas was born in 1417 in the village of Safenwil in the canton of Aargau. His parents were wealthy peasants. He married Elizabeth Wettinger in 1446 and they had ten children together.
In 1467, Nicholas had a vision of the Virgin Mary which changed his life. He became a hermit and began to live a life of prayer and contemplation. He attracted many followers who came to him for guidance and wisdom.
Nicholas became known for his prophetic visions and his ability to heal the sick. He also gained a reputation for being able to cast out demons.
In 1481, Nicholas had a vision of the end of the world and he began to prepare for it. He sold all of his possessions and distributed the money to the poor. He also urged others to do the same.
Nicholas died on March 21, 1487. He was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1893.
