Every year on November 9, Azerbaijan celebrates State Flag Day. This holiday commemorates the day in 1918 when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic adopted its first flag. The current Azerbaijani flag was adopted in 1991, after the country gained independence from the Soviet Union. The flag features three horizontal stripes of equal width, with the top and bottom stripes being blue and the middle stripe being red. In the center of the flag is a white crescent and eight-pointed star, which represent the country’s Turkic heritage. The flag is also decorated with a pattern of vertical lines, which symbolize the country’s mountain ranges.
