History of Winter Solstice in Macau and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Winter Solstice, also known as Dongzhi, is a traditional Chinese festival that falls on the 22nd or 23rd day of the twelfth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is the day with the shortest daylight hours and the longest night of the year.
Dongzhi celebrates the reunion of family members and the coming of winter. On this day, people would make glutinous rice balls (tangyuan) and eat them in soup. Tangyuan symbolize unity and togetherness. Families would also get together to make and eat dumplings (jiaozi).
In Macau, Winter Solstice is also a public holiday. Many people take the day off from work and school to spend time with family and friends. Some people also visit the Temple of A-Ma to pray for good luck in the coming year.
