History of Chinese New Year Holiday in Taiwan and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Chinese New Year, also known as the “Spring Festival” in modern Mainland China, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia. Observed by Chinese and many other Asian communities around the world, the holiday is commonly referred to as the “Lunar New Year”.
The Spring Festival occurs every year on the new moon of the first lunar month, about two weeks after the winter solstice. The precise date can fall any time between late January and early February in the Gregorian calendar, with the festival lasting until the 15th day of the first lunar month. In 2020, the Spring Festival will occur on Saturday, January 25.
During the Spring Festival, people in Taiwan typically return home to spend time with their families, partake in feasts of traditional foods, and set off fireworks. The holiday is also a time for cleaning one’s house and decorating it with auspicious symbols such as the dragon and the phoenix.
