Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival that is celebrated in India. It marks the end of the nine-day navratri celebrations and the beginning of the ten-day Diwali festivities. Dussehra commemorates the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. It also symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.
Dussehra is celebrated with great pomp and show across India. effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkaran are burnt on this day. People also dress up as Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman to reenact the great battle between good and evil.
Dussehra celebrations also include feasts, music and dance. In some parts of India, Dussehra is also marked by the start of the harvest season. On this day, people offer prayers to Goddess Durga and seek her blessings.
