The first day of Sharad Navratri is celebrated as Ghatasthapana. It is the beginning of the nine-day festival that is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. On this day, a small pit is dug in the earth and filled with water. A Kalash (a sacred pot) is placed on a stand in the center of the pit. A coconut is placed atop the Kalash and adorned with flowers. The Kalash is then filled with water and a puja (worship) is performed.
