History of Ganesh Chaturthi/Vinayaka Chaturthi in India and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. It is observed throughout India, but is especially popular in the state of Maharashtra. The festival typically lasts for 10 days, and culminates in the immersion of Lord Ganesha’s idol in water.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the fourth day of the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada (August-September). According to legend, Lord Ganesha was born on this day. The festival is thus also known as ‘Ganesh Jayanti’.
Lord Ganesha is widely revered as the god of wisdom and learning. He is also the remover of obstacles and is invoked before undertaking any new venture.
On the first day of the festival, an intricately crafted clay idol of Lord Ganesha is installed in homes or public pandals (temporary shrines). The idol is worshipped with great devotion for the next 10 days. On the final day, the idol is taken through the streets in a grand procession and then immersed in water.
