History of Vaisakhi in India and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Vaisakhi is a harvest festival celebrated in India, and falls on April 13 or 14 every year. It is also the day when the Sikh new year begins. The festival is celebrated with great pomp and show, and people from all walks of life come together to enjoy the festivities. Vaisakhi marks the beginning of the solar Sikh calendar, and is thus an important event for the community. On this day, Sikhs dress up in their traditional attire and visit the Gurudwaras to offer prayers. A special Nagar Kirtan, or procession, is taken out on the streets, and people can be seen dancing and singing religious songs. Feasts are organized and langar, or free community meals, are served to all. Vaisakhi is also a time for social gatherings and funfair activities. The festival is thus a joyous occasion that is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Sikh community.
